"I would say laughter is the best medicine. But it’s more than that. It’s an entire regime of antibiotics and steroids. Laughter brings the swelling down on our national psyche, and then applies an antibiotic cream. . . . Obviously, it’s a challenge to make light of the darkness but, um, it’s better than crying about it."
—Stephen Colbert, interviewed in Entertainment Weekly

"Colbert . . . has reached a trippy level of meta-supra-self-referentiality that requires an advanced degree in philosophy? set theory? to understand fully."
         —John McQuaid, Huffington Post

Greetings, Heroes!

Portrait Colbert University is an ongoing collaborative project: a viewer's companion for The Colbert Report. We explore aspects of the show's comedy and catalog its major recurring characters, terms, segments, and in-jokes.

And of course we celebrate the Report's star, Stephen Colbert—particularly in our archives, where you can see clips from his earlier work, read his speeches, and peruse interviews with him.

MortarboardRecent additions:
 * Newly added audience questions: What's Stephen's favorite Sunday school lesson to teach? Does Tek Jansen prefer blondes, brunettes, or redheads? And more...
         * We celebrate Mother's Day with Stephen's mother, Lorna Colbert, and a radio interview with Stephen about his childhood.
         * Wayback Machine: How did Stephen celebrate his birthday (May 13) five years ago? Talking with radio's Leonard Lopate in a wide-ranging interview about working with Paul Dinello and Amy Sedaris, their book Wigfield, and comedy in general.
         * New in Dancing with Stephen: The unforgettable Colbert-Rain Dance-Off!
         * Meg fans unite! We update the character's bio with her recent appearance.
         * Stephen adds Arabic and conversational Dutch to his retinue of Foreign Languages
         * Check out our new diploma, y'all—the Bachelor of Truthiness—and, of course, our beautiful new logo at the top of the page!
         * Our Faculty Associates continue to make their superstantial contributions: The May It-Getter's Quiz, and the ever-expanding Extra-Credit Reading List!
